The Menopause is something almost all women will go through in their lifetime and on average can start in their forties. Perimenopause is the period leading up to Menopause when oestrogen and progesterone levels start to decline and menopausal symptoms start to appear. This phase can last for months or years. Menopause is when you do not have a period for 12 consecutive months and once you are through that you are considered Post – Menopausal.
This chapter of a woman’s life is unique to them and hence timing and symptoms will differ greatly. So what are some of the symptoms? Fluctuating periods, unexplained weight gain, joint pains, mood swings, poor memory, panic or anxiety attacks, hot flushes, night sweats, extreme fatigue, heart palpitations, dry and itchy skin, dry vagina and mouth, drop in libido. Oh my goodness who knew!!!
Some ladies breeze through this phase , lucky them, but sadly many ladies feel the full brunt of these symptoms and as there is still such a stigma attached to Menopause they feel ashamed and suffer in silence. No ladies, you are not losing your minds , you are not past your ‘sell by’ date, this is not the end for you. This is simply a different time of your life, and can even be a better time of your life if you let it.
